The Man began as a character in the Breathtaker graphic novel where he was presented as a real-life super hero who was an agent of the NSA. For reasons of PR, the NSA had also set The Man up with his own TV show, comic book series, toys and other merchandising. The character was so popular that one issue of the Make Way for the Man comic book series (#138) was created, taking advantage of the opportunity to both parody and expand on the super hero genre.
